Josephene.

Tell us about your label, Josephine, and what inspires your designs?
My label Josephene by Jo Lucchesi began with handbags. My design philosophy was, Celebrating your Uniqueness. My business grew locally with individual and boutique runs, of tailored and casual textile handbags and accessories. Seven years later, having heard hundreds of women talk about their lack of confidence about their changing bodies, not being able to find good fitting garments, and lacks within their wardrobes, I was inspired to do something about this. I started dressing women again. Now my design philosophy is, Providing styles, silhouettes and a personalised service to support my idea that women can love their reflection, enhance their shape and become fully alive.
How did you get into designing women's wear?
My Father was a Cutter in the Fashion Industry and I was his helper throughout high school. Having graduated from Fashion College in Adelaide, working as a freelance Pattern Maker and creating made to measure for hard to fit figures, I was thrilled to land the job as a Pattern Maker at R.M.Williams. I worked there for seven years in the Product Development section. My boss, an Italian Tailor took my knowledge to another level. R.M.Williams was a brilliant company to work for and I loved that job. During those years, I married a lovely man, had three gorgeous sons then moved to Mildura, rural Victoria. I thought that was the end of my career.
Creativity surged. My business began in my closet, expanded to the kitchen table, took over a bedroom [with a door – so exciting!]. Then, I’m so pleased to say, my husband project managed the building of my Studio. It’s next to our home, so I get to walk to work, and lock the door at the end of the day and walk home! Having teenage sons now, I am easily accessible for them. It’s perfect. So, in this beautiful space, I design, make patterns and manufacture gorgeous garments for real women. It’s what I’ve always done and what I’ve always loved.
When you're not working, what do you like to do for fun?
I have many wonderful people in my life, and I find it so enjoyable and replenishing to spend time with them, which always includes good coffee and good food. Quality time and nourishment. It fills my cup. I’m always so busy in my own story that I also find it a great hide away to watch someone else’s story, so I enjoy movies, too.

What brings you the most joy from your creative practice?
There is so much joy in hearing a woman say, how she feels so good, so comfortable in my designs; wears them lots; appreciates dresses with sleeves; loves the fit and quality. Most especially I find joy when she says that she feels beautiful in my designs as that speaks of gained confidence and acceptance of herself, too. That is a very special moment. Isn’t that the moment we all need?

What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be involved?
I was drawn to the confidence and creativity Hustle&Scout is curated with. The line up looks amazing and I’m thrilled to be part of it this December!
MY FAVE THINGS
Song on your ultimate mixtape:: Tina Arena, Don’t look back. Just love the line, I refuse to live an ordinary life. I sing it out loud on my road trips!

Your role model/s: The women in my family. They are beautiful, strong, visionary, intelligent, hard working, resourceful, determined, loyal, loving, kind and fun to be with.

Kito 1981.

Tell us about your label, Kito 1981, and what the name means?

Kito means "element" in Swahili, and this word is the very foundation of the Kito 1981 brand.

Through a range of accessories – including handmade leather sandals, designer sunglasses and state-of-the-art headphones – Kito 1981 helps define style and create each individual's unique ‘element’.

All products from Kito 1981 are of premium design and maximum quality. Only the finest, selectively sourced materials are used. Kito 1981 is about staying true to the clean and classic aesthetic, and the brand is the raw, instinctive synthesis between personality, fashion and design.

Your Made in Greece Collection was inspired by history and the Cyclades Islands of Greece, tell us more about this...

Throughout the Kito 1981 collections, you will find elements of Greek history and European influence. This is mostly due to the founders' background.

Nikolina was born in Greece and grew up in the idyllic Santorini where her father still lives. Caitlin visited the island last summer for the first time and that’s where they had the idea of creating a collection made in Greece. This signified the birth of the Made in Greece Collection of handmade leather sandals.

The collection represents the rawness, simplicity and elegance of the Greek islands in its minimalistic aesthetic and distinct personality. It includes sandals named after iconic destinations such as Mykonos, Santorini and Paros.

How do you source your materials?
The finest European leather has been used for the Made in Greece Collection of handmade leather sandals. We have attended and participated in exhibitions around the world to source the best materials, and uncover inspiration for future collections.
What is the creative process behind your designs?

With the Made in Greece Collection, we were looking to channel the unique, timeless, historical style of ancient Greece – our inspiration came from music, art and history. Leather sandals have been made and worn in Greece for centuries, and the Kito 1981 collection reflects the classic, ever-enduring aesthetic of these ancient sandals.

Kito 1981 sandals are made using traditional methods for maximum durability and comfort. The brand’s aesthetic remains clean and classic across all designs, and all products are made to last.

What can market-folk expect to find at the December 5 event?
Visitors to our stall can expect to experience flashbacks to (or instant cravings for!) summer in Greece. They will find authentic, easy-to-wear handmade leather sandals, alongside a range of complementary accessories. And visitors will not be able to miss us, for our store will be presented as a blue-and-white Mediterranean holiday!

Amber Gaye.

Tell us about your label, Amber Gaye, and how it all began?
From a young age I was always making things. I used to make denim bags for my Barbie dolls! I was first introduced to leather when I did a school holiday art program, and loved it as a child. I made my first leather clutch as a bit of fun and dabbling with leather, to use on a Saturday night out with friends. This prompted me to make a few more, then friends started ordering them. I took a huge leap of faith, quit my job in the Homewares industry, and got together a little range to sell at markets. It pretty much snowballed from there. Within a few months I had store owners ordering and my range was being featured in magazines. It was a total whirlwind, within 2 years I had opened a retail store, and was stocked in 50 stores across the country. The label has changed and evolved so much over the years. I took some time out when my daughters were younger, and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support from such dedicated admirers who have followed me on this journey. 15 years on, the label still maintains what has always been at its core, and it’s this that has kept it going.
What do you love about working with leather?
Leather is so luxurious and tactile, it’s soft and buttery and that new leather smell is divine. I love that it is a natural product, and I like to think that I am giving something a new life by creating something beautiful from it. Leather has a certain enduring quality that you just cant find with fabric or man-made materials, and this is really important to me, to create a piece that goes against throw-away fashion.
When you're not working, what do you like to do for fun?
My work is my fun a lot of the time, I really do love my work. But otherwise, you’ll find me surfing my standup paddleboard, at the beach, hanging with my family.
What brings you the most joy from your creative practice?
I get so much satisfaction in the creative process that comes from having a vision in mind, and working through seeing it come to life as a beautiful object. I have always loved creating things with my own hands. Nothing is better than seeing it bring joy to someone else, especially seeing it well loved for years to come.
What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be involved?
The fact that its aim is to support Australian fashion, I just had to be a part of that! I love connecting with other designers of Australian labels and makers of locally made products, it’s really inspiring and encouraging to see so much incredible local talent.

MY FAVE THINGS
Fave fashion piece you own: My collection of Spell Castaway skirts!
Meal to have cooked for you: Anything cooked by my mum, it takes me back to nice memories from my childhood.
Fave place to unwind: Surrounded by ocean on my standup paddleboard.
Song on your ultimate mixtape: Loving some Xavier Rudd right now.
Accessories or bag you have made: My current staple is the Amber Gaye Bucket Bag, I take it everywhere, it’s such a relaxed and easy-going style. But there’s always a special place in my heart for one of the first bags I made, a cute little embellished suede fringe bag (pictured right), that I still love 15 years later.

A Silver Circle Design.

Tell us about your label, A Silver Circle Design, and what inspires your designs?
A Silver Circle Design is a handmade contemporary Jewellery practice. Combining Sterling silver and subtle elegant forms I focus on materiality, craftsmanship and balance. The pieces are modern, refined and adaptable. My design philosophy explores materials and the natural world. I use unrefined pieces of wood and highly refined polished silver to contrast the textures, forms and qualities of each material. I focus on combining the binaries of hard vs. soft, light vs. dark and warm vs. cold to find a balance between in the in the conflicting elements.
How do you source your materials?
I source my silver from a local (Sydney) supplier and all my additional materials are things that i have collected over the years. I use recycled circuit boards, branches and scrap pieces of wood in my work. Some materials i have had for over 10 years and had not known how i was going to use it until the inspiration strikes so they hang around until my vision is clear for them. I really enjoy giving something a new life.
What do you enjoy most about selling online and being able to do markets as well?
I really love doing markets and meeting new people. I enjoy seeing someones instant and raw reaction to my work as well as their continual surprise when they notice more and more details. When viewing it online you get to see these details instantly so you are drawn to that first. So it is an interesting contrast as to what is noticed more at markets as opposed to the online platform.
What item in your studio could you not live without and why?
My Jewellers Saw. It is the one thing that i usually start a project with and is one of the most essential tools in my practice. It is the first tool i learnt how to use and i now find it quite relaxing to do a lot of saw piercing.
What can market folk expect to find at the December 5 event?
Lots of beautiful jewellery and a friendly smile! Market-Folk can have fun mixing and layering my pieces together to create different looks while keeping it clean and elegant.
MY FAVE THINGS
Fave place to unwind: My Loungeroom. It has beautiful coloured windows and ornate ceilings as well as a big bookshelf full of art books. It is my place to relax, read a good book with a cup of tea. It is also where i get inspiration for new jewellery pieces.
Australian Jewellery Designer: Marian Hoskings. I have always loved her references to nature, her ability to use simple ideas in repetition to create amazing things as well as the textures she uses in her work.
Meal to have cooked for you: Roast Chicken and Vegetables. It reminds me of home cooked Sunday meals with my family when i was growing up.
Fave piece you have made: The first A Silver Circle Ring. Mostly as this really cemented my style, my brand name and gave me a clear vision of what i wanted to make.
Guilty Pleasure: Chocolate! Lots of it!!!

Murphy and Me Handmade.

Tell us about your label, Murphy and Me Handmade, and what the name means?
Murphy and Me is all about creating quality but funky handmade jewellery! I strive to create unique designs that are well presented and everything boring mass produced generic jewellery is not!
Most people wonder who Murphy actually is, they often guess that it is my maiden name or my child’s name but those guesses are both wrong. Murphy is my childhood dog, a mini schnauzer cross terrier and yes he is (touch wood) still kicking!
Where did your love of jewellery and hair accessories evolve from?
As a young girl I always remember admiring my mum’s jewellery and accessories. I love colour and I love to mix and match patterns. It is so hard to find affordable jewellery that is wearable everyday AND not identical to the rest of the population. So I began making earrings for my friends and family and when they kept coming back asking me to make more as gifts for their loved ones I thought I should give it a serious go. Since beginning Murphy and Me seven months ago I have focussed on handmade earrings but also added necklaces and hair accessories to the brand.
What do you enjoy about selling online and being able to do markets as well?
Selling online gives me great freedom in terms of when I can make jewellery as I also have an 8 month old son at home. It also means I am open for business 24 hours a day! While I love using social media to build an online presence and to connect with people across Australia and the world I do love the personal interaction and sense of community when meeting new people and supporting other local makers. I also love that ‘buzz’ that you get when selling at a Market.
When you're not working what do you like to do for fun?
I am not the kind of person to sit still for long! I like to create, bake, read and go on road trips where the route is not yet planned! As I mentioned above I also have the sweetest little boy (not at all bias) who is changing and learning about the world every day. He takes up a lot of my time… but he is fun to be around so I don’t mind!
What can market folk expect to find at the December 5 event?
A colourful and affordable fun range of handmade goodies that are suitable for those small and tall!
MY FAVE THINGS
Fave fashion piece you own: Tough one…probably my Turquoise Kate Spade handbag. It is bold and bright! It was a beautiful gift from my parents when they visited NY.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: I always wanted to work for a trendy magazine or be an interior stylist (which is still a dream!) but I am happy creating jewellery and teaching in a primary school.

Australian Fashion Designer: Alice McCall.

Item in your studio: The lolly jar! Always there to help a girl through late night making sessions.

Song on your ultimate mixtape: Summer Rain remix… the ultimate sing out loud, feel good dance song!

Ahoy Birdy.

Tell us about your label, Ahoy Birdy, and what the name means?
Ahoy Birdy is a jewellery label that aims to create beautiful one of a kind pieces with a meaningful story behind it.
Where do you draw your design inspiration?
My inspiration comes from anything magical, mystical or cosmic. Totem animals, folklore, fables and mythology from all cultures inspire many of my items. I hope when people wear my pieces they can relate to the story behind it, perhaps using it as a talisman or charm, maybe reminding them of something good or powerful in their lives.
What do you hope to achieve over the coming year for Ahoy Birdy?
I’d like to keep creating and working on my jewellery, making custom pieces and being continually inspired.

Your jewellery is hand crafted using recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones, tell us about this sourcing process and where the materials come from…
My silver comes from a local Sydney manufacturer, the metals are recycled and I collect my scrap pieces to be recycled again.
All of Ahoy Birdy gemstones are purchased in Jaipur. I have been travelling to India for many years and I really do find the most beautiful gemstones there. My gems are all cut to my specifics and I then carefully check each one for quality, colour and cut. I never purchase gems that have been treated for colour enhancement as I believe this not only takes away from the gems natural beauty, but also affects the gem on a metaphysical level.
My turquoise is purchased from Arizona in the USA. I believe this is where the most beautiful and varied turquoise comes from and has been widely used by Native Americans for centuries.
What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be a stallholder?
It’s a fresh, creative market with loads of beautiful items on display. I’m all for encouraging local businesses and I’m really looking forward to being a part of it!
MY FAVE THINGS
Fave place to unwind: Walking through the rainforest after some heavy rain with my partner and border collies. Everything is fresh and clean, it’s a great time to re-focus my mind for new inspiration.

Australian Jewellery Designer: William L Griffiths of Metal Couture is my favourite Australian designer. His work is so inspiring. He creates beautiful, incredibly detailed pieces that truly are works of art. His style is very quirky, he’s the Salvador Dali of jewellery design.

Meal to have cooked for you: I would have to say anything Thai or Indian, it would have to be vegetarian and spicy.

Fave piece you have made: My favourite piece so far is the dream catcher with the Royston ribbon turquoise. I’d purchased the turquoise for myself, and had it hanging around my studio for a while waiting for the right design. It was a few months before it all finally came together. I’ve only just recently discovered ribbon or boulder turquoise, which I love. It has similar qualities to boulder opal, my all time favourite gemstone. The lines across the boulder section of the stone really make the perfect ‘web’ for my dream catcher.

Guilty Pleasure: Shopping online! There’s something about waiting for the postman to arrive with a package just for me.

Bamikbam Design.

Colourful and patterned wooden studs.
Tell us about your label, bamikbam design, and what the name means?
bamikbam design has been in existence since 2002. Frankie created the brand with her unique colour and material combos, taking them to the Canberra market scene. More recently and after many brainstorming sessions, Myvanwy - the creative powerhouse - came on board; adding a few hand sewn treats to compliment an incredible collection of necklaces, earrings and brooches. We decided to stick with the name bamikbam as we think every accessory adds BAM to everyone’s wardrobe.
What inspires you creatively and keeps you motivated?
Colour, patterns and the desire to make outfits pop with fabulous accessories. We’re inspired in our everyday life to be that ‘little bit different’ and having bamikbam has given us a platform to spread the joy! We are forever brainstorming new ideas and ways to bring our customers products and accessories that they’re missing from their wardrobe and haven’t even realised.
What are your creative goals for the coming year?
We definitely plan to expand bamikbam's customer base by attending markets and increasing our online presence. Also to continue creating distinctive and unique pieces.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the creative scene in Canberra?
Having recently rejoined the Canberra creative scene, we are most looking forward to getting to know other makers and creators and gaining inspiration from Canberra’s amazing collective hub.
What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be a stallholder?
Hustle & Scout offers us an arena to put our brand out there in the best possible style with exciting venues and an all inclusive market. We really feel this is how markets ‘should’ be with an emphasis on connecting with artists, soaking up the atmosphere and buying locally.
MY FAVE THINGS
Fave item you have made: Frankie: I recently made a necklace for my amazing sister, it was a wooden silhouette of a woman's head decoupaged with inspiring thoughts…blessed, love, live, good times, create. She loved it. Myvanway: I love the ‘spike’ infinity scarf. The pineapple fabric was my first sourced online and I was just so excited. It continues to be one of our biggest sellers.

Meal to have cooked for you: As mothers of young children, we will gladly eat any meal not cooked by us! If it’s hot, bonus!!

Fave place to unwind: At the risk of inciting groans because it's pretty soppy, we both unwind making things for bamikbam! This is the thing that allows us to explore our creative passions.

Item in your studio: Myvanway: Mine is definitely my overlocker followed closely by my rotary cutter. I guess I should also give an honourable mention my sewing machine. Frankie: Hardcore glue, I use E6000 and my Dremel...formally my partner’s Dremel!!

What you wanted to be when you grew up: Myvanway: Sad tale - I’ve always wanted to be a mum with the opportunity to explore my crafty side. Frankie: I was desperate to be a chef as a child. Once I entered hospitality I discovered that the kitchen was quite hot (der!) and the fun was usually being had out on the restaurant floor!

Solution Solution.

Tell us about your line of laundry products, Solution Solution, and how it all began?
Solution Solution is a laundry brand for the modern world: where everybody has laundry but nobody has a spare moment. We realize that doing the washing is not something you necessarily look forward to so we have tried to create products to make the laundry more enjoyable. Our washes smell beautiful and are very gentle so you don't need to worry about damaging your clothes. That's really how Solution Solution was born. Katie and I both love clothes but noticed that there was a massive knowledge gap when it came to taking care of them. Our website and blog is filled with information on how to properly care for your clothes which complements our washes.
What are the goals for Solution Solution in the coming year?
We see ourselves as the new science, and the lost art of laundry. Hopefully we can revitalise the garment care industry! We want to teach people how to love their clothes longer and encourage them to learn about their clothing too. At Hustle&Scout where you have the opportunity to speak with designers that process is simpler.
You developed the formula for your products in partnership with the CSIRO, what did you enjoy about that experience?
Katie has degrees in Chemistry and Pharmacy. She developed all of our products herself and then approached The CSIRO to use technology in order to make our innovative products as effective as possible. It has been a great process which we have thoroughly enjoyed. Utilising science in such a surprising and unexpected way has been so much fun. As a non scientist I have learnt a lot.
When you're not working, what do you like to do for fun?
I actually do enjoy doing the washing now! So that's nice, because it has to be done. I am currently completing my honours and Katie is completing her Doctorate in Jurisprudence. I am also in a musical currently and Katie has two beautiful children. That takes up all of our time and some!
What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be involved?
Katie and I have both attended Hustle & Scout in the past. We love the high quality goods that we see at hustle and scout and we obviously love fashion. Supporting local businesses is also really important to us. Art is at the core of our brand and it a big part of Hustle & Scout. So the fact that Hustle & Scout was a fusion of these things made it something we were really keen to be a part of.
MY FAVE THINGS
What you wanted to be when you grew up: Katie: Everything! So being an entrepreneur lets me do that by working in art, science and laundry. Jo: I wanted to pick up rubbish from the side of the road with a stick. As you can see I have always wanted things to be as clean as possible.

Your role model/s: Katie: SCOTUS Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she is tough, intelligent and classy. Jo: Dr Catherine Hamlin - her complete commitment to the improvement of the lives of women is awe inspiring.

Meal to have cooked for you: Katie: Anything, and I will eat it all! I love food but I would much rather do laundry than cook. Jo: Butter Chicken - naturally I love food that is incredibly likely to stain your clothing.

Country you have visited: Katie: Africa, it is just so different, it influences your perspective on life. Jo: Oman. I don't even feel like I need to explain why - it is so beautiful.

Song on your ultimate mix tape: Dirty Laundry by Kelly Rowland and Cleaning out my closet by Eminem - as you can see we like themed R&B.

Runaway Apparel.

Tell us about your brand, Runaway Apparel, and how it all began?
Runaway Apparel started with a desire to provide affordable fitness apparel to ladies that is fashionable and of high quality.
What are your creative goals for the coming year?
Our main creative goal is to add more designs to our collection. We are also looking into increasing our colour options. We have worked closely with various local businesses to establish our brand and look forward to collaborating with more local designers in the future.
Describe the Runaway Apparel design aesthetic...
We would describe Runaway’s designs as simple, unique and slightly urban. We really dig geometrical lines and mesh detailing. We want to design and supply items that can compliment and work with a wide range of fashion styles.

When you're not working, what do you like to do for fun?
When we aren’t working, we absolutely love training at various places around Canberra like F45, Original Bootcamp, Crossfit SFS, Anytime Fitness and Elite Physique. We also love creating amazing foods, brunch being our favourite meal.
What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be a stallholder?
Having attended the markets last year and seeing what a great opportunity it is for local businesses to show case their products, we just couldn’t resist. The atmosphere is so unique and intriguing it really sets it apart from other markets. We are so excited to contribute to the day and explore other people’s creative work!

MY FAVE THINGS
Fave place to unwind: Outside with fresh air and sunshine, we LOVE the beach and having picnics. We are able to clear our minds, relax and brainstorm.

Your role model/s: We are inspired daily by our friends and family who have continuously shown us their support. As part of our Runaway family, we have two amazing local girls who are strong and motivational women that represent our brand.

Item in your studio: Currently, our favourite item in our studio is the newest member to our team: Dolly, our mannequin. We are so excited to have our clothing on display and be able to offer customers the opportunity to see and try on our clothing.

Guilty pleasure: Nutella.. on strawberries.. on top of pancakes with choc chips.. The list could go on.

Fashion item you have made: We love our mesh panel leggings. The feedback we have received on the comfort, style and affordability has been so amazing and humbling. We hope to have new stock available over the coming months.

Red Corner Boxing.

Boxing gear at a fashion market? You bet.

Hustle&Scout punches above its weight once more with Red Corner popping up for the first time at the September twilight market.

But, seriously. Boxing gear?

It’s a perfect fit. Red Corner is no ordinary Canberra company and they certainly don’t design ordinary boxing gear. Director Michelle Walton says Red Corner’s range, never seen before in the marketplace—at least not until the company launched its new collection on the catwalk at Fashfest 2015—is hot.

Its innovative boxing gloves and focus pads, for women and men, are fashion-forward, combining fabulous graphic designs and digital prints with bold, bright colours that truly pop. Fuschia, electric blue, ruby red, royal purple, lime green and sun yellow are some of the colours used and the designs are just as vibrant—mosaic, checkers, loopy and feathers, for example.

‘We’re breaking the mould,’ says Michelle Walton, Director, Red Corner. ‘This is serious gear that fits like a glove, designed for those who want to get fit, look great and feel empowered while training, whether amateur or pro. And it’s not just black and red.’

At Hustle&Scout, Red Corner will have on hand a limited run of about 60 units. ‘Once these are gone, they’re gone,’ says Michelle. ‘Work is well underway on our next line of designs.’

Red Corner’s gear doesn’t just look amazing, it feels amazing.

‘After extensive product research and development and over 25 years in the fitness industry, we came up with quality products, with visible value, made with tested materials,’ says Michelle. ‘Most importantly, we’ve designed products to be “gender-fit”, recognising that women want quality, functional boxing gear customised to their needs. They’re tired of wearing men’s gloves that don’t fit as well as they should.’

The functionality of the gear is superb, so much so that it’s being worn by Adriana Smith, a Canberra competitive amateur boxer with a national ranking and now Red Corner’s Ambassador. Adriana is seen punching and throwing upper cuts on the company’s posters. Her boxing ambition is to represent Australia at the 2016 Olympic Games.

‘The first time I used Red Corner boxing gloves I immediately noticed how comfortable, firm and secure fitting the gloves were and I was really impressed with the creative designs and colours,’ says Adriana. ‘I choose Red Corner when teaching my women’s boxing classes and Red Corner delivers on both fit and fashion.’

Canberra athlete and fitness model, Jenna Douros, says her introduction to Red Corner was ‘love at first sight’. ‘I was first introduced to Red Corner at Fashfest red carpet event,’ she says. ‘The comfort of the glove was nothing less than flawless, complementing the chic and sexy design that every female would love.’

The timing is perfect for the introduction of Red Corner’s gear with a growing number of Australians keen on fitness boxing as a great way to get a total body workout, an exhilarating way to improve cardio, strength and balance—especially women.

‘We looked at what Nike has done with fitness gear and thought “Why not boxing gear too?”’ says Michelle.

FASHFEST accepted Red Corner because it truly does combine fashion and fitness, says Andrea Hutchinson, co-founder of the red-carpet fashion event: ‘Guests were amazed at what they saw on the catwalk and totally intrigued.’

And now it’s time for guests of Hustle&Scout to be intrigued, and even inspired to throw a punch or two to get fit with looking fab.

By Marie-Nicole.

Tell us about By Marie-Nicole, and how it all began?
It all started with a humble blanket hanging up in the corner of an op shop, with all it’s holes and ware marks, yet still oozing so much character, along with stories within that will remain untold... this blanket was just waiting for someone like me to recognise its potential, rescue it from it’s unfortunate fate and give it a new purpose with many new stories to be made, in it’s new form as a guitar case... and then have it’s remnants used to make another guitar case and a few little tote bags. This then led to my quest of spreading some repurposed blanket love around our state, our nation and then the globe, bringing smiles to the faces of many, the nostalgia, the recycling, the beautiful quality of the weave brought back in to the lime light, there are so many reason’s people love this range... and what it has evolved into, rescuing kangaroo leather & cow hide offcuts and well as duck and chicken feathers... giving each resource a second chance at being appreciated, valued, utilised and treasured!
What do you love about working with second hand and pre-loved items?
Aside from the hidden stories that lie within them... the quality of how they were crafted. I have fond memories as a child growing up in Melbourne of going to work with my mum who was a seamstress at the time and worked in a clothing factory with many other migrants skilled in garment production. It was a melting pot of cultural backgrounds and the aroma in the lunch room was mix of the various cuisines of all the countries represented in this one factory... along with this came the sounds created by the varied accents all chirping away like birds in a tree, sharing stories of their experiences both past and present. These memories make me appreciate the people behind the creation of the goods.

I am finding it increasingly frustrating these days that there is so much cheap mass produced rubbish in op shops and recycle centres, it represents a sad change in our society... one which I’d like to help reverse. The more we focus on quality over quantity the better for us, our environment and the global community.

What item in your studio could you not live without and why?
Sir Stitch, my 1960’s industrial sewing machine... and his new companion Madame Pfaff, I have only recently acquired her she is a little fancier in her step as she can zigzag, but he is a little more considered in his, he has been fitted with a pulley system that slows him down which is great for leather work. As most micro business owners do, I started this business with a domestic machine, but the difference industrial machines make to the quality & efficiency of my work is phenomenal.
What can mark-folk expect to find at the September 12 event?
Lots of rescued & repurposed goodness. Old Woollen Blankets transformed into: Guitar Cases, Totes & Satchels. Leather and Feather items: cuffs, belts, key tags, earrings and necklaces. There are a wide variety of items within my collections as I endeavour to use every last piece of the precious natural resources I work with, to minimise waste and maximise the appreciation of these beautiful materials.

MY FAVE THINGS
Your role model/s: Anyone who is authentic in their beliefs, lives and breaths their passion. ~ Kim Nelson (an extremely talented artist) for his passion and dedication to our community and the arts, ~ The Dalai Lama for his compassionate, inclusiveness and common sense teachings, ~ The Birdsall Family who have owned and run the tannery since the late 1800‘s, I purchase my leather from them, ~ Wendy & Anthony from Vetro E Metallo, fellow market stall holders who travel to three different markets each week to sell their beautiful recycled metal jewellery, ~ Rohan Anderson, the hunter, gatherer, grower of food and author of Whole Larder Love & Practiculture.

Meal to have cooked for you: Anything Moroccan, especially when made by my husband... we travel through our food and Moroccan meals always take me on the greatest culinary adventures. I can’t wait to visit Morocco some day, smell the spices in the air and lose myself all the beautiful colours and patterns that adorn it’s streets.

Fave item you have found: My one and only striped suitcase for the story behind it’s discovery. We were looking at buying a very old and very large pub in a nearby village. It was in desperate need of renovations and a clean up, the rooms were filled to the brim with stuff, both trash and treasure, in the very far corner of the last dimly lit room we viewed I spotted this suitcase and asked the owner how much he wanted for it? To which he replied; “You’d be doing me a favour if you just took it.”

Song on your ultimate mix tape: My Silver Lining by First Aid Kit...My journey through life has not been easy, but it’s certainly taught me more than I think I would’ve learnt if it were a smooth ride.

Country you have visited: I have not visited my favourite country yet, it would be one steeped in tradition & culture, with food & artisan crafting central to there existence. But out of the country’s I have visited I’d have to say the USA has been my favourite... I never actually thought I’d hear myself say that, since America wasn’t on my bucket list, but circumstances took us there and it turned out to be a turning point in our lives. With only two weeks up our sleeves we decided to spend more time in less places, We had to go to Chicago for a wedding so the other city we chose to visit was New York City. Both cities were inspirational for very different reasons. NYC challenged & inspired me in ways I did not expect it to. I came back with a renewed appreciation for the natural beauty and space that surrounds us here in Australia in close proximity to our cities, which is more like a big town compared to NYC. Our trip also left me with a great appreciation for what America has to offer, we’d like to return one day and see more of the country and it’s natural wonders.

Urban Charms.

Tell us about your label, Urban Charms, and what inspires your designs?
I have been a longtime lover of tiny things. My love affair with miniatures began when I was a small girl ogling my aunt's tiny silver tea set in the cabinet. I'm also a lover of food and creating, so I've combined these passions into Urban Charms! I once wore a tiny teacup ring I'd made to work and was inundated with requests, and the rest is history...
What brings you the most joy from your creative practice?
I love watching something begin as a lump of polymer clay and then transform into a wearable piece of art. The exhilaration I feel once I've created a piece I'm happy with is overwhelming. I've been known to do a happy dance around my kitchen when a particularly good batch of miniatures has been baked.
Describe a typical day in the life of Lisa...
I'm also a mum and educator, and I run another new business in Canberra, so I'm generally a very busy person. A typical day when I'm not teaching revolves around my son's school hours, so I make the very most of those hours that I can. I try to be very scheduled and planned with my time, otherwise I'm a pretty good procrastinator!
How did you get into jewellery design?
I've been creating in one form or another since childhood, so at one stage beading was a natural progression for me. I packed the beads away in my early 20's and moved on to other crafts, but in recent years felt a yearning for jewellery design again, but this time I wanted to do something entirely different. My passion for miniatures propelled me into the miniature food jewellery market and here I am!
What can mark-folk expect to find at the September 12 event?
I make an array of gorgeous miniature food jewellery and accessories, including my very popular range of earrings. You'll find necklaces, brooches, rings, earrings all inspired by food and made from polymer clay. I also have a range of wish globe pendants that have been very popular.

MY FAVE THINGS
Country you have visited: I absolutely adored France! I know it's very cliche, but France has a certain romantic quality to it! I love the language, the architecture and the history. I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

Piece of jewellery you have made: I still have a crush on the very first piece of food inspired jewellery I ever made. It's a ring with a ceramic plate, teacup with two biscuits on the side. It reminds me of comfort food and sitting down with a cuppa after a long day!

Meal to have cooked for you: Anything to do with someone else cooking for me and I'm in! I will love it for the pure fact that I'm not cooking! And pasta. Anything pasta and I'll love you forever.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: I wanted to be a Park Range when I was growing up. I love animals and thought I'd be able to handle being in the great outdoors all day.

Dint Designs.

Tell us about your label, Dint Designs, and what inspires your designs?
Dint designs is hand crafted contemporary jewellery made by me in Canberra. I love making jewellery, starting with a piece of metal and creating something that someone will choose to wear and hopefully love as much as I do. Textures influence me - I love the way different textures look, feel and reflect light.
What do you hope to achieve over the coming year for your label?
To have more time to experiment with different pieces.
What did your love of jewellery evolve?
I have loved jewellery for as long as I can remember. I used to love trying on my mum’s jewellery when I was growing up. My parents gave me a gold bangle when I was a young girl and it ended up having to be cut-off my wrist as it wouldn’t come off anymore. I still have the two pieces of cut bangle and they hang above my jewellers workbench.
Tell us about your workspace...
My workshop is setup in my house in Canberra and has relaxed feel. My workbench is under a window that has great light.
What can market-folk expect to find at the September 12 event?
Lots of earrings, rings, necklaces and bangles made from sterling silver, copper and brass.

MY FAVE THINGS
Meal to have cooked for you: Absolutely anything cooked by my amazing mum.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: A superhero would have been fun!! But as that wasn’t an option… I had absolutely no idea and loved changing my mind weekly. I would always dream of different things. Now at the age of 36 I have found that thing and I love it!

Australian jewellery designer: No one specific, I’ve always loved unique handmade pieces that have character. I have mostly bought jewellery from markets.

Song on your ultimate mix tape: I love most music but don’t have an ultimate song as there are just too many to choose from.

Piece of jewellery you have made: I love my twin spinner ring with a copper and silver spinner. I wear it everyday and play with it a lot.

The Good Wife and Co.

Tell us about your label, The Good Wife and Co., and what the name means?
Those words - TGW & CO says it all! Adversity in my life nurtured the incubation of this name to "its" profoundness. I am immensely proud of what this name eludes to (and yes Alicia Florrick from the television show is one of my favourite characters!). Strong women with values that have carried them through life and their success achieved in whatever form that may be career, family or all of this.
What do you love about working with silk and cashmere?
I always maintained - as I personally went looking for - beautiful organic fabrics at an affordable price provides inspiration. Just to think our 100% cashmere bathrobe in blush pink is manufactured from the fur of the Kasmiri goat and our 100% silk chemises, the silk comes from the worm!
What do you enjoy about selling online and being able to do markets as well?
I love the diversity these two platforms provide. Online sales during the past 4 years - men have surpassed women in sales.. Face to face selling - so far have only been to women (although many times it is the man who stops to look at my stand with their female partner)!
Describe The Good Wife and Co. design aesthetic...
We love simplicity and we love allowing the woven fabrics used to be the highlight. We construct our garments with the minimal amount of hardware - our chemises have adjustable straps which are metallic rather than plastic which breaks easily. Our cashmere products have no adornment other than belts and ties. There is no buttons, sequence or other embellishments other than what is necessary. Our silks have only lace or none at all - our colours speak for themselves.
What can market-folk expect to find at the September 12 event?
Vibrant colours, well constructed garments and products that are not easy to find at this price point. If you want silk and cashmere sleepwear - we happily provide.

MY FAVE THINGS
Fave item you have made: 100% Cashmere Travel set - designed by me - born from travel experience whereby I was always carrying Pashminas in my carry on to drape over my daughter and myself for warmth during the flight.

Item in your studio/office: I hang all my silk chemises on my wall and everyday I am amazed at the colours.

Your role model/s: My mother and grandmother - industrious and hardworking women. My grandmother could not read or write but still owned and ran a grocery store - never turning anyone away who didn't have money but needed bread.

Fave fashion piece you own: the one piece that started it all for me - a 100% silk slip with lace by the bust area and hem - purchased from my first part time job when I was 20 years old studying at university. I still have it.

Country you have visited: Recently, India - looking for cotton fabric suppliers - for designs I am working on for summer sleepwear.
