Tell us a bit about your label and how you got into making jewellery?
The essence of sixD is handcrafted
jewellery. All of the designs tell a story. My inspiration is drawn from a wide
palette including ancient and mythical symbolism. I use recycled metals, stones
and a variety of finishing techniques in the creation of my unique unisex
pieces.
I've had experience making and designing jewellery for over 10 years, my passion was ignited whilst working part time for an opal specialist in high school.
I've always had a
thirst for knowledge on the construction and design for all types of jewellery.
Initially, it was an obsessive hobby, so I started selling my one-off pieces at
the local markets for fun. I was excited by the response to my work, as people
were very positive about my designs.
Finally in 2012, I
decided to take it seriously and focus on a style that is now sixD. I felt I
could offer something fresh to jewellery design. With sixD, I am able to say
the things I want to say, and express my ideas. At the markets, I quickly
developed a loyal following and my pieces were picked up by magazines like
RUSSH, Cosmopolitan, CLEO and Sunday Style, which led to making pieces for
designer boutiques.
What inspires your designs?
Everything. But for then current collections, it was predominantly
ancient art, mythical religious symbolism, primitive interpretations of the
natural world and modern art.
I
love to read books, watch films and documentaries on music and art.
I
also get inspired by watching the people around me, and how creativity in
jewellery and fashion, speaks volumes without having to saying a word.
Inspiration
can hit me at any time, I've been known to sit in the park just sketching, or
just sketch whilst waiting for the bus.
I love the challenge of working out how my
ideas/sketches can come to real life. I'm inspired by interesting objects, why
they work, how they connect and how to make them.
What has brought you the most joy from your creative practice and why?
Seeing
my designs out and about, being worn and loved.
What can market
folk expect to find at our November event?
My new collections for 2014 are called the
‘Iconimmersion' and ‘Numeromancer'.
The ‘Iconimmersion' Collection 2014 is a
Capsule Fine Jewellery Collection, it is a re-interpretation of the classic and
iconic shapes and symbols in true sixD style.
For these limited edition pieces, I will be
using Akoya pearls, Swarovski vintage crystals, and 50’s West German glass
cabochons set in 9ct & 18ct yellow, rose or white gold.
The sixD 'Numeromancer’ Unisex Collection 2014
is inspired by the love of numbers. Since the beginning of time, the great
mathematicians have tried to describe the world by numbers. This collection is
sixD's tribute to our favourite math geeks who have defined the way we look at
the world.
What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be a stallholder?
The
aims of Hustle&Scout are in total alignment with my own. As
a lover of fashion I would love to be part of the select collection of labels. Each hand-picked not only
for the beauty of the products but the connection with the designer and artist.
Guilty pleasure: Watching my favourite re-runs whilst having a glass of Pinot Gris and Swiss chocolate.
First song on your ultimate mixtape: Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush.
Fashion item you own: Just one fashion item? ;-) It would have to be the 80's linen cascading skirt from Yohji Yamamoto given to me by my mother.
Place to unwind in Canberra: National Gallery of Australia.
Thing you have made: First ever pair of earrings made of leather, pearls and 18ct gold.
