What was it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to apply to be a stallholder?

Hustle&Scout promotes fresh Australian fashion. My attraction is the contemporary  new styles and the buzzy fun atmosphere projected.

How would you best describe your label?

Sarah Bourke Jewellery is striking and bold, yet the softness of wood is warm and colourful. The work will bring a piece of nature to cultural Canberra.

MY FAV THINGS.

Guilty pleasures?

Cant go past a glass of Red and slithers of Melbourne’s Pana chocolate watching foreign films.

Well I more enjoy card playing and I'm lucky now I have a 6 and 7 year old to share the fun, the favourite at the moment is Too Many Monkeys…

Things to cook to impress?

Has to be Japanese Banquet, to taste a variety of simple exotic flavours such as agedashi tofu and sesame eggplant. Always a surprising dinner and I think I tend to use every implement and saucepans in the kitchen.

Unwind in Canberra?

Canberra is more of a place to shop and gallery hop for me, I live in the bush and culture is my way to unwind in Canberra, release more creative energy .

Song to dance to?

If there is a flamenco guitar its hard to sit still.

STYLE SCOUTERS.

At this Saturday's Hustle&Scout Winter Warm-Up market, you may see these two lovely ladies wandering around. Don't be shocked when you find them looking at YOU rather than the flurry of fashion stalls around them. Why is this, you ask?

Introducing, our Style Scouters.

Canberra Fashion bloggers, Jiawa from Closet Voyage and Heather from Heat Storm, will hit the NewActon Nishi in search of Canberra's finest fashionistas. They will be armed with their large-lensed cameras on a mission to show-off Canberra's most stylish. Tonight we catch up with them for a quick chat about their mutual love for fashion and what they'll be looking out for on the night...

Heather and Jiawa.

What inspired you to start your own fashion blog?

Jiawa: We put a lot of effort into shopping and styling ourselves, so isn’t it a pity that only a few people get to see the outfits we put together every day? I started my blog because I just loved the idea of being able to share my personal style with fashionistas all around the world.

Heather: I was doing a web design course for my bachelor's degree, and one of our assignments was designing our own blog. Consequently I was doing a lot of research online and fell in love with Rumi Neely's blog, Fashion Toast. After that, I decided to start my own website, and five years later I'm still so passionate about it, especially now that I've met so many other like minded bloggers here in Canberra.

What will you be looking out for on the night?

Jiawa: I’ll be looking out for people who wear what they love, and love what they wear. They will be people who have clearly put thought into their head to toe style, down to the accessories.

Heather: I'll be looking for fashion with a capital F. I love bright colours, and people who aren't afraid to have a bit of fun with their outfits.

What are your style tips for this Winter?

Jiawa: This winter, investing in quality basics is key: a great fitting pair of jeans, a few chunky knits, a quality wool coat – pieces that easily mix, match and layer, for lots of outfit combinations.

Heather: Pretend you're an ice princess. Great a great fur coat (or fake fur if you prefer) and bundle up with cute scarves, beanies and mittens.

Do you think the fashion scene in Canberra is on the rise? Why?

Jiawa: In the past few years I’ve seen Canberra’s fashion scene blossom, everywhere I look. I believe it’s because one person’s initiative inspires others, so more and more new fashion concepts and events are popping up all the time.

Heather: Absolutely. With events like FASHFEST and Hustle&Scout, the fashion community here is really coming together and challenging each other to achieve more and more. There's a perception that all Canberrans just wear boring office attire, but I love heading to the markets or into Braddon and checking out all the interesting people.

Canberra Institute of Technology hits Hustle&Scout...

Tell us about CIT’s new 6 month course building a bridge between the creative and commercial world.

The Advanced Diploma of Creative Product Development is a new course for Fashion, Photography and Visual Art students offering a cross disciplinary model. This is the first time in Australia where fashion designers, photographers, artists and designers will study together in an innovative ‘hub’.  A collaborative business focussed model of creative vocational education.

CIT has been responsible for producing a high calibre of fashion design graduates over the years. What do you think has been the key to ensuring these graduates are industry-ready and equipped with the skills to take their design careers to the next level?
The key to students being industry ready are that they are not only designers but have a good underpinning of technical and theoretical skills as well as the rigour of presenting to panels, working on business and marketing plans and creating sustainable solutions to problems. Our designers are sort after because they have the perfect mix of theory and practice, creating a critical and creative thinker who can hit the ground running!

Do you believe Canberra’s fashion design scene is on the rise? Why?
Fashion in Canberra has never been stronger and things are only looking up. Designers in Canberra have a unique mix of high end design thinking and traditional craftsmanship which gives Canberra fashion a genuine point of difference amongst other labels in Australia. The Canberra fashion design scene is coming of age with many young designers having their own premises, selling at markets, or online.  Fashfest, our very own four day fashion festival, has demonstrated that Canberrans have enough talent in this town to hold their own in this competitive industry.

What can punters expect to find at the CIT stall at the upcoming Hustle&Scout?
Visitors to the CIT fashion stall at Hustle&Scout can see what it takes to be a designer in today’s fast paced industry. They can speak with current CIT students to see how they go from an idea in their head to a market ready piece of fashion. They will see some innovative work from amazing hi-tech textiles to fashion that makes you think. See what it takes to go from concept to catwalk and everything in between.

Takin'5 with Paul Krix...

Tell us a bit about your label and what marketeers can expect to find at the winter market.

I follow a pretty unusual design process for my jewellery. Im a programmer as well as a designer so I outsource some of the design work to my computer. I write a custom piece of software for each line of jewellery which creates design files for each piece almost ready to manufacture. Its a bit of a trade off because it means there is a massive amount of work at the start of the process, probably a lot more than you would guess, but then for every new piece I can take a step back and take more of a curatorial role, selecting which designs get made and which dont make the cut.

Most of what I do is heavily influenced by nature. Every new line starts with research and experimentation. I have copied how leaf veins form themselves biochemically, learned how succulents choose where to place new leaves and explored the hyperbolic structures that give things like coral or kale leaves their shape.

Marketeers can expect to find bright colours and abstract shapes with a clear influence of nature. Everything I produce is a one-off.

What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to apply to be a stallholder?

Its the quality of the market that really impressed me and made me want to apply. The other stall holders were all of a high standard, the setting was really good but also there was a great overall feel to the thing. Its a whole experience rather than any one particular element.

Then there is the ethical side of Hustle&Scout which struck a chord with me. Sustainability is a passion of mine and so is supporting emerging Australian designers.

MY FAV THINGS.

Guilty pleasure?
Design porn. Its a full blown addiction. I just cant keep my eyes off beautifully photographed architecture, home wares and tableware. Seriously its like crack to me.

Board game?
I like my board games semi-nerdy and Settlers of Catan is probably my favourite. But for a party game Articulate or Taboo are a lot of fun! Anything where you have to talk faster than your brain can filter means people start saying stupid things.

Thing to cook to impress someone?
To impress someone I like to go with a dessert. Ginger creme brûlée or a rosemary and lemon syrup cake look great and taste fantastic. I made a peach galette recently that I was really happy with. If you fan slices of peach across the top its just looks so damn good. Then its all about little touches on the side - ice creams, strained yogurts, reductions, dustings, edible flowers, whatever will look good and compliment the main flavours.

Place to unwind in Canberra?
I dont really have a favourite place. If Im not unwinding at home or out with friends then I rarely do the same thing twice but I do like to grab a hot drink and drive somewhere at dusk. Theres a spot halfway up black mountain with a great view of the city lights or if Im further north theres a car park near lake Ginninderra where you can watch the ducks go to sleep. You just try being stressed out while watching a duck fall asleep, its impossible.

Song to dance to?
You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall and Oates. Theres not much more I can say about it, it compels you to move.

Otherwise anything with a saxophone solo. Or any kind of synth-pop. Ill dance to most songs.

Getting to know Leatheron...

Tell us a bit about your label and what marketeers can expect to find at the winter market.

Leatheron is about applying leather to apparel fashion without compromising the design. I created my label to give my customers the opportunity for their style to be unique and to empower them to have individual character, presence and confidence!

Marketeers can expect to find some of my current collection Guns & Roses, which was influenced from the notion of contrasting war and love. I took raw military looks and added floral shapes and finishing detail touches.

I will also be showcasing my next collection 11kingdoms, which was inspired from Games of Thrones. This collection was all about bringing ancient customs and making them ready to wear for the modern office. I am looking for that ‘power executive’ look. We are all modern warriors battling to be the best and take the ‘throne’. I also took inspiration of different race’s ancient warriors, such as the Samurai.

What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to apply to be a stallholder?
I had too many designer friends and the organisers of Canberra Handmade recommend it!

MY FAV THINGS.

Guilty pleasure?
Designing, because I get along time to really think and connect with my idea and the process of creating that into reality. Fishing, because you never know what can happen!

Board game?
The classic Monopoly, so I can dominate J

Thing to cook to impress someone?
Garlic prawns, Stir Fry, Pasta, because I have done them many times and they taste amazing!

Place to unwind in Canberra?
In my hotel room, because every time I am in Canberra I am so tired from trading at the markets.

Song to dance to?
All pop and RnB, it’s upbeat and FUN!

Getting to know Hanny-D Creations...

Tell us a bit about your label and what marketeers can expect to find at the winter market.
Hanny-d Creations was launched in 2009 from a burning desire to bring awareness to the need for sustainable practices in the fashion industry and how we can do more with less by upcycling, re-using, and rescuing materials that would otherwise be headed to landfill.

In May, Hanny-d appeared for  the first time at Fashfest 2014 to a very receptive audience with a collection of blocked and clashing colours. The clothing on the catwalk was created using a combination of new and upcycled fabrics whilst all the handbags were made from 100% re-purposed materials.

In 2009, 2010 and 2011 Hanny-d was involved in the Re-Loved Creations Franchise fashion events and pop-up shop. Other fashion parades include the Sustainable Careers Day at the ANU and Frugal Fashions, fashions made with upcycled materials, at Benedict House.

Market attendees can expect to see the Fashfest collection as well as new winter stock including a few coats, scarves, skirts to name just a few. There will also be a collection of handbags, totes and purses all made from re-purposed materials.

What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to apply to be a stallholder?
Hustle&Scout is an interesting marketplace with a wide variety of high quality artisan stallholders. This is what initially caught my interest and that I know there will be good quality merchandise all around. I feel it’s important to be around like-minded people who value quality over quantity.

Hustle&Scout offers the opportunity to introduce the Hanny-d Creations label to the general public in a very hands-on way. People will be able to touch and feel the merchandise and not just look at pictures.

MY FAV THINGS.

Guilty pleasure?
I think my guilty pleasure would have to be Cherry Ripe ice cream....for no other reason except it tastes so good!

Board game?
I love board games especially Scrabble and Monopoly. I like to make up words and see if they’re in the dictionary. Sometimes I’ve been quite surprised to find my “new word” there in print. Monopoly is a fun way to play millionaire.

Thing to cook to impress someone?
I love to make Osso Bucco. It’s a little time consuming to prepare but once it’s cooking in the oven all the hard work is worth it. Team this up with a little gnocchi, some garlic and herb bread and of course red wine, for a perfect meal that will impress everyone who tries it.

Place to unwind in Canberra?
I like to go out to Urriarra Crossing and walk along the river bank. The sounds of nature all around and flowing water is very soothing and gives me time to find myself again.

Song to dance to?
Dancing music is a very personal thing and depends entirely on the mood. For a romantic mood I would choose an old time classic like “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole. For a high energy mood you can’t beat The Black Keys...pretty much anything of theirs, but “Lonely Boy” is a good one to start with.

Takin' 5 with the boys from Nature Park.

Tell us a bit about your label and what marketeers can expect to find at the winter market.

Nature Park is a recently established local t-shirt and fashion accessories label. We specialise in hand-printing our original and unique designs onto high-quality garments using water-based inks. We will be bringing the first of our winter line of super warm hoodies to the July Hustle&Scout, along with our current range of t-shirts and bags.

What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to apply to be a stallholder?
After doing the hard yards selling our merchandise at trash and treasure markets in the local car park, we realised that we needed to step it up a level. We believe that Hustle&Scout can provide the right environment for our label to reach out to the appropriate customers and therefore help us flourish.

MY FAV THINGS.

Guilty pleasure?
Whiskey and dry, although we're not so sure that we feel much guilt over it.

Board game?
Scrabble, because in an age of 'SMS' and 'tweeting' someone needs to remember how to spell ;)

Thing to cook to impress someone?
Vietnamese rice-paper rolls – cheap, tasty and healthy. Win/win/win.

Place to unwind in Canberra?
Anywhere with deciduous trees in autumn.

Song to dance to?
Will dance to anything as long as nobody is watching.

Getting to know Rochelle from Summerblossom...

Tell us a bit about your label and what marketeers can expect to find at the winter market.

Made from beautiful, high quality materials, silks and the odd subtle sparkle, Summerblossom accessories are made by hand and with heart. The Summerblossom collection is made up of a range of whimsical floral goodness including hair pins, hippy wraps, headbands, clips and combs. And because they’re entirely handmade in Australia, they’re the perfect alternative for the thoughtful consumer.

For Hustle&Scout we are making some really beautiful flower crowns, warm headband wraps (perfect for ACT winters!) and chain headpieces, and we’ll also be packing our signature range of silk flowers and headbands.

What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to apply to be a stallholder?

Firstly, I just love Canberra, it’s such a beautiful city that I always love visiting. I’d heard some really rave reviews of Hustle&Scout from a few Sydney designers and a friend who lives in Canberra. I popped onto the Hustle&Scout website to investigate further. I saw the super-sweet video, adorable branding and the interesting venue and immediately thought “this looks like the perfect fit for Summerblossom!”.

When I first started my label I did every market I possibly could (workaholic much?) but these days I’m much more selective because I think that awesome markets with top notch stallholders reflect so much better on individual brands, and that’s much more important to me now that I’ve had a little experience. I cannot wait to see my lovely ACT customers in July!

MY FAV THINGS.

Guilty pleasure?
Pretending I’m “exercising” when I really just ride my bike (very slowly) to Centennial Park then just sit next to a tree, soak up some sun and Instagram. Plus I’m guilty of pinning and reposting a million of those pretty/daggy images with inspirational quotes!

Board game?
Hands down Monopoly Millionaire cards! It’s like traditional Monopoly in a way but there’s no board, just playing cards. Seriously, my friends and family were all a little sceptical, then one game in and everyone who plays becomes obsessed.

Thing to cook to impress someone?
I love cooking, but I’m a little fussy (vegetarian and mostly vegan/gluten-free - geez!) so I don’t think my meals really impress people who aren’t like me, ha. Although that said, my green veggie curry with coconut rice is a bit of a crown pleaser. Oh and then there’s this potato/cashew/curry pie my family just loves. I wish I could bake, but I can’t! I pin stacks of beautiful cakes and slice on Pinterest, but every time I attempt one they fail miserably.

Place to unwind in Canberra?
Hands down my favourite place in Canberra is my friend Bec’s place. It’s adorable. She loves craft too, has the best art prints all over the wall - candles galore. Her whole house could be straight from the pages of Frankie Magazine. Plus the awesome company. I also love the dumplings at this one restaurant in Dickson.

Song to dance to? Beyonce's “Love on top”… or anything by Kimbra or Solange.

"I believe with every essence of my being that all women and girls are truly beautiful. Too often we're told we are not good enough for various fashion trends and labels. Which is why I created Summerblossom; a brand that is truly accessible for any girl and encourages you to embrace a positive body image and feel beautiful as you skip out the door with a flower in your hair."
