Canberra Institute of Technology hits Hustle&Scout...

Tell us about CIT’s new 6 month course building a bridge between the creative and commercial world.

The Advanced Diploma of Creative Product Development is a new course for Fashion, Photography and Visual Art students offering a cross disciplinary model. This is the first time in Australia where fashion designers, photographers, artists and designers will study together in an innovative ‘hub’.  A collaborative business focussed model of creative vocational education.

CIT has been responsible for producing a high calibre of fashion design graduates over the years. What do you think has been the key to ensuring these graduates are industry-ready and equipped with the skills to take their design careers to the next level?
The key to students being industry ready are that they are not only designers but have a good underpinning of technical and theoretical skills as well as the rigour of presenting to panels, working on business and marketing plans and creating sustainable solutions to problems. Our designers are sort after because they have the perfect mix of theory and practice, creating a critical and creative thinker who can hit the ground running!

Do you believe Canberra’s fashion design scene is on the rise? Why?
Fashion in Canberra has never been stronger and things are only looking up. Designers in Canberra have a unique mix of high end design thinking and traditional craftsmanship which gives Canberra fashion a genuine point of difference amongst other labels in Australia. The Canberra fashion design scene is coming of age with many young designers having their own premises, selling at markets, or online.  Fashfest, our very own four day fashion festival, has demonstrated that Canberrans have enough talent in this town to hold their own in this competitive industry.

What can punters expect to find at the CIT stall at the upcoming Hustle&Scout?
Visitors to the CIT fashion stall at Hustle&Scout can see what it takes to be a designer in today’s fast paced industry. They can speak with current CIT students to see how they go from an idea in their head to a market ready piece of fashion. They will see some innovative work from amazing hi-tech textiles to fashion that makes you think. See what it takes to go from concept to catwalk and everything in between.
