MissKelly Made in Tasmania.

Tell us about your jewellery label, MissKelly Made in Tasmania, and how it all began.

I have been trying to tap back into my creative side since having my first child. It was not until after my third child that I discovered polymer clay. My niece gifted all the females in the family handmade polymer clay jewellery for the Christmas of 2012. I was amazed at the possibilities! For the first year I experimented with shapes, cutting techniques and mixing colours. It was a lot of fun. And gradually shops started noticing my creations via social media- from there MissKelly Made in Tasmania just grew.

In some ways of all the creative pursuits, jewellery designing and making seems to come naturally to me. My grandfather (whom I've never had the privilege of knowing as he passed away when my mum was only very young) was a jeweller and owned his own jewellery business. My mother remembers fondly how he used to bring home a piece of jewellery once a month especially made for her.

Today when I make my pieces I feel a sense of connection to my grandfather. It feels as though he embedded this art in my DNA, and even though I've never met him, I feel I know him through my creations.

MissKelly Made in Tasmania is therefore more than just a piece of jewellery, it's a story and connection between myself, my mother and my grandfather. And one day I hope it will be a story between myself, my children and my grandchildren.

What do you love about working with polymer clay?

I love working with polymer clay as it is so versatile - you can create any shape, colour and texture. With polymer clay you are only limited by your imagination! I love sharp clean lines, as you can see from my jewellery a lot of my shapes are facets and geometrical.

Where do you draw your design inspiration from?

A lot of my inspirations for shapes and colours come from current fashion trends. However I adopt the concept of simplicity when designing. Simplicity equals classical and timeless, and this is what I want to reflect in my creations.

What can market-folk expect to find at the June event?

There will be plenty of our facet jewellery ranging from ear studs to necklaces, all in rich wintery hues.

What is it about Hustle&Scout that made you want to be involved?

I am very excited to have my first market with Hustle & Scout. Hustle & Scout is a great platform for me to introduce some of my range via a market setting. We love that they are all about promoting the smaller emerging artists with an innovative and unique edge.

MY FAVE THINGS

Guilty pleasure:
I have a sweet tooth especially for chocolates. I think it's because I grew up not having much of it.

Song on your ultimate mixtape:
Anything Cold Play, they have songs that relax me and songs that motivate me (when I have a pile of orders to complete).

Fashion piece you own:
A pair of Chanel earrings bought as a gift for me but my ears are not pierced!

Place to unwind in Hobart:
Any local cafés in Hobart with good coffee! Normally it's when the kids are at school and hubby and I have a spare moment to enjoy a cuppa and catch up.

Otherwise a stroll along a local beach with the kids.

Item in your studio:
I have lots of little treasures and gifts lined up on my studio desk from friends and swaps with other makers- from prints to potted cacti.
